ABOUT THE EURASIER

In the 1960's Julius Wipfel crossed the Chow-Chow and Wolf-Spitz to create the wolf chow. His reason for crossing these breeds was his quest to create the perfect dog, one that would make the best family pet. Thus in the mid 1960's he added a new strand to the gene pool that of the Samoyed. He called this new breed the Eurasier, being as the breeds used to generate this dog originated in Europe and Asia.

Each of the dogs used in the breeding program were of the same generation, as it was essential that balanced morphological and psychological characteristics were achieved, only those that did not have heavy resemblance to either breed were kept.

The goal/target of the strict breeding program was to create a dog that as earlier mentioned was perfect, by this mean that it had certain characteristic properties that the creator Mr Wipfel identified as being most desirable. Those being -

: Good temperament

:Elegant body & Head shape

:Solid, medium build

:Intelligence

:Little possibility of suffering from jealousy

:Must be good with children

:Slightly reserved personality

But even though the Eurasier was created in the 1960's it was not formally recognised by any club/society body until the 1970's, until the German Kennel Club in 1973.

At present the breed can be found in a few countries around the world but the breed is only sparse compared to other better known breeds.

We at Keesstars first introduced the Eurasier into NZ in 2003 with a bitch we imported from Australia.

Unfortunately we only had her a very short time when it was discovered she had HD and had to be put down. The breeder never replaced her. We have waited many years to go back into the breed and as this breed is very rare we decided to look at the UK to bring in our lines. We made sure that the lines had been tested and we were obtaining good quality sound lines for the future of the breed. As there are no longer any breeders in Australia of this lovely breed we wanted to bring into NZ Eurasiers that would do the breed proud.

We imported first, a male "Kano" then were very lucky to obtain "Karma" (female.)

Both are an absolute delight and we couldn't be happier with them.

When the time comes we look forward to breeding from them and having the first ever litter of Eurasiers in New Zealand. We will also be looking at bringing in new lines at a later date.

Many thanks to Sue & Bill for this delightful girl she is a real sweetheart and we are thrilled to have her with us at Keesstars. It certainly was Karma that we obtained her so her pet name "Karma" couldn't be more appropriate.
